I'm thanking you, God, out in the streets, singing your praises in town and country.
Psalm 108:3 - MSG
“Praise, give Him praise, give Him praise in the highest.” Whenever I hear this song, I am reminded that Scripture repeatedly calls us to praise the Lord. “Praise God!” “Praise the Lord!” “Praise Jesus!” These are all phrases we hear from time to time. While they are generally heartfelt and sincere, there is always the danger of routine taking up residence in our hearts while genuine praise quietly waits in the shadows.
Not so with the psalmist. He is out in the streets, about town, and in the countryside. Everywhere he goes, he is praising the Lord. Ever wonder why? Look at the first part of the verse. He is thanking God.
Regardless of how good or difficult life may seem, there is always a reason to praise Him and give thanks. Why? Because He has chosen us to be His children and is faithfully working in us, shaping us to become more like Christ.
“God is good.” That's another phrase we hear often. Of course, the response quickly follows: “All the time, and all the time, God is good.” Many of us have spoken those words ourselves. And rightly so. His goodness alone is reason enough to thank Him and lift our voices in praise.
But what does that mean when the darkness of life casts long shadows across our hearts? What good does it do to praise Him when our hearts are heavy, uncertainty clouds our future, or discouragement refuses to leave?
In general, simply being grateful helps support emotional well-being, reduce stress, and encourage a more hopeful outlook. Yet for the Believer, gratitude goes even deeper. When we thank God, our thanks is directed toward the One who sustains us, provides for us, and remains faithful through every season of life. Worry causes us to replay our fears and frustrations. Gratitude redirects our attention to God's faithfulness, His presence, and His promises.
When we praise Him, we are not declaring that life is always good. We are declaring that God is good even when life is difficult. Praise reminds us that our circumstances do not define His character.
And when we gather with other Believers and lift our voices together, we remember that we are not walking alone. We belong to a family of faith, united by the same Savior, sustained by the same grace, and encouraged by the same hope.
So today, whether your heart is overflowing with joy or weighed down by concern, choose to thank Him. Choose to praise Him. Not because every circumstance is pleasant, but because God remains worthy of praise. Sometimes a song offered in a difficult season becomes the very thing God uses to remind us that He has been with us all along.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your goodness, Your faithfulness, and Your never-ending love. Forgive us when praise becomes routine and gratitude fades from our hearts. Open our eyes to see Your blessings, both great and small, and teach us to praise You in every season.
Thank You for walking beside us through every trial and triumph. May our words, thoughts, and actions bring honor to Your name today.
In Jesus' Name, Amen…
