Perfection Personified

In a word, what I’m saying is, Grow up. You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.

Matthew 5:48 - MSG

It is indeed true that the Word of God tells us to be perfect. But absolute perfection is impossible for us to achieve in our own strength. So why does Jesus tell us to be perfect, just as our heavenly Father is perfect?

To understand His words, we need to look at what Jesus was teaching. He had been speaking about loving our enemies and showing kindness even to those who do not love us in return. Our heavenly Father extends His goodness to all, and Jesus calls us to reflect that same generous, wholehearted love.

The word perfect carries the idea of completeness and maturity. Jesus was not calling us to a lifetime of frustrated striving for flawless performance. He was calling us to grow into the fullness of the life God desires for us, reflecting His love more completely in the way we treat others.

Yet many of us struggle with a different kind of perfection. It whispers that every mistake is failure, every weakness is unacceptable, and every accomplishment could have been done better. We spend our days striving, measuring, comparing, and wondering if we will ever be good enough.

But as Believers, as true Followers of Jesus Christ, we do not have to earn God's acceptance. Through Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, made new, and brought into a relationship with our heavenly Father. His Spirit dwells within us, patiently transforming our hearts and developing the love, grace, kindness, patience, and compassion of Jesus in our daily lives.

We are fully accepted through Christ, yet we are still growing in Christlikeness. Our standing before God rests on the finished work of Jesus, not on our flawless performance. Our daily walk, however, is an opportunity to become more like the One who saved us.

That is why Christian growth is not about trying to earn a new identity. It is about increasingly living out who we already are in Christ.

The pursuit of excellence still matters. We should seek to love better, serve better, forgive more readily, and reflect Jesus more clearly. But excellence and perfectionism are not the same thing. Perfectionism anxiously asks, "Have I done enough?" Excellence joyfully asks, "How can I honor God more fully?" Perfectionism focuses on performance. Excellence focuses on faithfulness.

Jesus calls us to grow in His love and character. Every act of kindness toward a difficult person, every choice to extend grace, and every step of obedience gives His Spirit another opportunity to work through us.

Today, rest in this truth: You do not strive for God's acceptance. You live from God's acceptance. You do not have to be flawless to be loved by your heavenly Father. Because of Jesus, you can pursue growth without the burden of trying to prove your worth. Let His love be your foundation, His Spirit your guide, and His character the pattern for your life.

Prayer

Father, thank You that my standing before You rests not on my own performance but on the finished work of Jesus Christ. Help me release the burden of perfectionism and grow in the freedom of Your grace. Teach me to pursue excellence as an act of worship rather than a means of earning Your approval. Let Your Spirit continue to shape my heart so that I reflect the love, kindness, patience, and compassion of Jesus each day. Help me live confidently in Your acceptance while becoming more like Your Son.

In Jesus' Name, Amen…
