If anyone boasts, "I love God," and goes right on hating his brother or sister, thinking nothing of it, he is a liar. If he won't love the person he can see, how can he love the God he can't see?
1 John 4:20 - MSG
It is easy to tell God we love Him. We can sing worship songs, pray heartfelt prayers, attend church faithfully, and speak openly about our faith. But today's verse presents a challenge that cuts through every spiritual label and every religious activity: How do you treat the people around you? Loving an invisible God requires faith, but loving visible people requires action.
The people God places in our lives are often imperfect. They disappoint us, disagree with us, irritate us, and sometimes even wound us deeply. Yet our love for God is revealed by how we respond to them. It is not enough to profess love for God while harboring resentment, bitterness, malice, or hatred toward others. In fact, this is the kind of “liar” being described. Ouch!
Remember that childhood rhyme? “Liar, liar, pants on fire, hanging on top of the telephone wire!” We might have laughed when we said those words as children, but today’s verse isn't joking around here. He's reminding us that claiming to love God while refusing to love others is a serious contradiction—a lie.
Love requires us to reject hatred, refuse bitterness, and seek God's grace to forgive, pray, and show compassion even when it is difficult. Loving others doesn't mean excusing harmful behavior or allowing someone to continue hurting us. We can extend forgiveness and grace while maintaining healthy boundaries.
Love is more than words and feelings. God calls us to show our love through our actions and choices. The true test of our spiritual maturity is not how loudly we declare our love for God, but how consistently we demonstrate His love to people made in His image.
When we choose patience over anger, kindness over criticism, forgiveness over revenge, and grace over judgment, we make the invisible God visible to a watching world.
The bottom line is simple: Our love for God should be reflected in how we love people. So, how will we do on the love test today?
Prayer
Father, thank You for loving me when I was undeserving of Your grace. Search my heart and reveal any bitterness, resentment, or hatred that does not honor You. Help me love others as You have loved me. Give me the courage to forgive, the humility to serve, and the compassion to reflect Christ in every relationship.
In Jesus' name, Amen…
