The Mercy Behind the Wait

God isn't late with his promise as some measure lateness. He is restraining himself on account of you, holding back the End because he doesn't want anyone lost. He's giving everyone space and time to change.

2Peter 3:9 - MSG

“Hurry up and wait.” It's a phrase we often hear when we're impatiently waiting for something to happen. It seems to be part of everyday life. I want what I want, and I want it now! Yes, we tend to be a bit impatient from time to time, don't we?

Today's verse speaks about the promised return of the Lord Jesus. Generations of God's people waited for the arrival of their Messiah. After Jesus ascended to heaven and took His place at the Father's right hand, His followers began looking forward to His promised return. Throughout the generations, Believers have continued to anticipate that day.

Hmm... Perhaps God doesn't operate on our timetable.

Have you ever wondered why God seems to wait? We pray, we watch, we hope, and sometimes we wonder whether His promises will ever come to pass. Yet today's verse reminds us that God's apparent delay is not evidence of His neglect. It is an expression of His mercy.

What appears to us as slowness is actually divine patience. God is not constrained by our clocks, calendars, or expectations. While we often want immediate answers and swift action, God sees the bigger picture. He knows the eternal destiny of every soul, and His heart is moved by a desire that people would turn to Him before judgment comes.

Every sunrise is another expression of God's grace. Every new day is an opportunity for someone to hear the gospel, repent, and be reconciled to Him. The continued unfolding of history is not proof that God has forgotten His promises; it is evidence of His patience toward a world that desperately needs Him.

Perhaps you have questioned God's timing in your own life. Maybe a prayer remains unanswered, a door remains closed, or something you have hoped for seems far beyond reach. While we cannot always know why God allows us to wait, we can trust the character of the One who holds our future. The same God who patiently calls sinners to repentance is worthy of our trust when we cannot understand our circumstances.

His timing may not match our expectations, but His heart is always motivated by love. One day, every promise God has made will be fulfilled. Until then, let us not mistake His patience for absence or His delay for forgetfulness. Instead, let us be thankful that His mercy is still reaching lost hearts, including our own.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your patience and mercy. Forgive me for the times I have doubted Your timing or questioned Your faithfulness. Help me trust You even when I cannot understand why I must wait. Thank You for Your patience in delaying judgment and for giving people the opportunity to turn to You and receive Your saving grace. Help me use the time You have given me to grow closer to You, share Your love with others, and show patience and mercy to those around me. May I never mistake Your patience for absence but learn to trust Your heart even when I cannot see Your hand at work.

In Jesus' name, Amen…
