The Good Old Days
“Don't always be asking, "Where are the good old days?" Wise folks don't ask questions like that.”
Ecclesiastes 7:10 - MSG
“Ah yes, the good old days.” It’s a phrase we hear often, and sometimes we even say it ourselves. At first it sounds harmless, but Scripture gently warns us that longing for the past is not wise. Why? Because when we look backward, we rarely remember the whole picture. We tend to memorialize those sweet “mountaintop” moments and forget the valleys. The past begins to look better than it truly was and today starts to feel heavier than it truly is.
The truth is simple: the past wasn’t perfect — but God was faithful in it. The present isn’t perfect — but God is faithful in your todays too. And yes, God will be in your imperfect tomorrows as well.
Our minds naturally soften yesterday’s pain. That’s a mercy from the Lord. He never intended for us to carry every wound at full strength forever. But if we’re not careful, that softened memory can create a false comparison. We begin to think something is wrong with today because it doesn’t feel as easy, as joyful, or as steady as the version of yesterday we’ve edited in our minds.
When that happens, nostalgia becomes a quiet trap. It can pull our attention away from the God who is working right now. It can make us wish for a season He has already led us through. It can tempt us to chase a version of the past that never fully existed — instead of trusting Him in the season in which we’re actually living.
Ecclesiastes reminds us that wisdom lives in the present. We can learn from the past, but we cannot live there. WE can’t live in the tomorrows either. Yesterday had blessings and burdens. Today has blessings and burdens, and so will the tomorrows. Yet in all of this, every day, God is faithful, steady, and near.
True victory comes as you trust Him today — not yesterday, not someday, but this very day. The old song says, “One day at a time, sweet Jesus.” That’s where peace is found. That’s where strength is renewed. That’s where God meets you.
And here’s the quiet surprise: The day you’re living right now — with its imperfections, its questions, its small joys, and its hidden mercies — is the very day you’ll one day look back on and say, “God was faithful there too.”
Today is the real “good old day,” because God is in it.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being faithful in every season of my life — in the days behind me, in the day I’m living now, and in the days still to come. Help me not to chase a version of the past that wasn’t perfect, but to trust You in the present moment where You are truly at work. Guard my heart from nostalgia that blinds me, and teach me to see Your goodness right here, right now. Give me grace to live this day with wisdom, gratitude, and quiet confidence in Your nearness. One day at a time, Jesus — that’s all I need. Thank You…
