A Look at Basic Christianity

“This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.”

John 3:16 - MSG

Here it is, everyone—Christianity 101. The beginning of the story for all of us. The reality of God’s love demonstrated by giving. Giving His Son. Giving us Jesus. Giving us eternal life.

And here’s the point most people miss about “eternal life.” It is not simply “going to heaven.” Eternal life is life with God now—life that begins now and continues forever. Through His Holy Spirit, God Himself takes up residence within those who belong to Christ. Then the “whole and lasting life” comes to those who make Jesus both “Savior” and “Lord.”

Hhhmmm… Both “Savior” and “Lord?” Yes.

We often refer to the One who saved us as “Jesus Christ,” as if Christ were His last name. But “Jesus” was a common name for a Jewish boy in that time. “Christ,” however, means “the Anointed One”—the Messiah. It is a title that tells us who Jesus is. He isn't simply Jesus. He is Jesus, our Savior, the Christ—the One God sent to redeem us, to give us a whole and lasting life.

But what about the “Lord” part? Someone once said that if Jesus isn’t Lord of all, He isn’t Lord at all. Perhaps you’ve heard that saying. So, let’s look at “Lord.”

The meaning from the original language is this: Sovereign, Supreme Authority, the One possessing rightful dominion. And here is where the word moves from theology into lived discipleship—what “Lord” actually does inside a believer’s life.

When we say Jesus is our Lord, it means He has the right to command. Not as a dictator, but as the One who created you, redeemed you, and knows you better than you know yourself.

If He is our Lord, then His voice becomes the standard by which everything else is measured—identity, morality, purpose, hope, and the meaning of life. His Word is not advice. It is authority.

“Lord” means Jesus owns your allegiance. To say “Jesus is Lord” is to say: My loyalty is His. My life is His. My decisions are His. My future is His. It is a declaration that dethrones every rival—self, sin, culture, fear, and even earthly powers.

If you truly want the whole and lasting life He offers, then for you “Lord” means Jesus is the One you obey. Period. Not perfectly, but sincerely. Not reluctantly, but willingly. Not occasionally, but as a pattern of life. Obedience becomes the fruit of love, not the price of acceptance.

If He is truly your Lord, then He is sovereign over your circumstances, your suffering, your waiting, your unanswered questions, and your future. His Lordship makes faith possible because His authority guarantees His promises.

Finally, “Lord” means Jesus is the One you worship. Your heart bows. Your will yields. Your life aligns. Your affections reorder themselves around Him.

To confess “Jesus is Lord” is to declare that He is God, He is King, and He is the rightful Ruler of your life. It means His Word is your truth, It means His Word is your truth, His will is your path, His authority is your covering, and your obedience is your response to His love. “Lord” is not merely a title—it is a surrendered way of living under His reign.

It is the only way to enjoy a full and lasting life. This is the reality of Christianity 101.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I acknowledge You as my Savior and my Lord. Thank You for giving Yourself so that I could have a whole and lasting life. Teach me to live under Your authority with a willing heart. Let Your truth guide me, Your voice steady me, and Your love shape my obedience. Be Lord over my thoughts, my choices, my future, and every part of my life. I bow my heart before You and surrender myself to Your reign.
