The Bond of Peace
…alert at noticing differences and quick at mending fences.
Ephesians 4:3 - MSG
As a teenager, I grew up in farm country where electric fences were used to keep cows in the pastures where they belonged. The fence wasn't intended to hurt the cows; it was there to keep them where they needed to be. I learned that lesson firsthand when, on a silly dare, I grabbed an electric fence and received enough of a jolt to make sure I wouldn't do that again!
If there was a break in the wire anywhere along the line, the electrical current couldn't flow properly, and the cows could wander wherever they wanted.
Life can be like that. Relationships can develop breaks that allow misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and division to creep in. That's why it's important to mend fences before small cracks become major divides.
In Christ, we have the source of true peace. Through the Holy Spirit who lives within us, God enables us to pursue peace even when our emotions are unsettled or our relationships become strained. His Spirit helps us respond with grace, seek reconciliation, and preserve the bond of peace.
But unity is not something we create—it is something God has already established. Our responsibility is not invention, but stewardship. We are called to guard what God has brought together and to live in a way that reflects the peace of His Spirit.
This requires us to be alert to tension in our relationships and willing to address it before it grows. It means choosing humility instead of self-importance, gentleness instead of harshness, and patience instead of quick reactions. It means recognizing that unity doesn't require us to agree on everything, but it does call us to treat one another with the love and grace of Christ.
As Believers, we have a responsibility to protect our relationships, soften our words, and be willing to mend fences when differences arise. We cannot control how others respond, but we can take responsibility for our own attitudes and actions. Sometimes, preserving peace begins with a humble apology, a gentle answer, or the willingness to listen before we speak.
So today, let's preserve the unity God has given us by noticing differences early and being quick to mend fences. Let's pursue peace through humility, gentleness, patience, and love. As we do, our lives can become a living testimony that Christ truly dwells among His people.
Prayer
Father, today I ask You to shape my heart for unity. You have already joined Your people together through the Holy Spirit, and I don't want to take that gift lightly. Teach me to be alert when differences arise and quick to mend fences. Give me the humility to lay down my pride, the gentleness to soften my words, the patience to slow my reactions, and the love to bear with others even when it feels costly. Make me a person who protects the unity You have established, and use my life as a witness to the world that Jesus truly dwells among His people.
In Jesus' Name, Amen…
