Know Your Real Enemy

This is no afternoon athletic contest that we'll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels.

Ephesians 6:12 - MSG

If you’ve ever laced up your shoes for a game, a race, or a match, you know the feeling—the adrenaline, the focus, the determination. I’ve spent years in competitive athletics: baseball, softball, football, basketball, tennis, racquetball, running, and martial arts. Those competitive moments were intense, but eventually they faded into memory. The whistle blew, the match ended, and life moved on.

But Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:12 that the battle we face as followers of Christ is different. This isn’t a temporary struggle or a friendly competition. It’s an ongoing spiritual battle, and it’s happening whether we acknowledge it or not. Here’s the key: the real enemy isn’t people.

Today’s verse tells us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood. The person who frustrates you, the coworker who opposes you, or the family member who misunderstands you may seem to be the source of your trouble, but they are not the enemy we are called to fight. Behind the conflicts, temptations, discouragement, and divisions of life lies a spiritual battle that we cannot win through human strength alone. The enemy seeks to draw us away from God by sowing fear, confusion, resentment, and division.

But this truth isn’t meant to make us afraid. It’s meant to make us aware.

When we understand who our real enemy is, we stop wasting our energy fighting the wrong battles. We stop treating people as adversaries and assuming every disagreement is a personal attack. Instead, we become more alert to the ways our circumstances can tempt us to respond with anger rather than patience, resentment rather than forgiveness, or fear rather than faith.

The next time someone frustrates you or a difficult situation tests your patience, pause before reacting. Ask yourself, Am I responding in a way that honors Christ, or am I allowing this situation to pull me away from Him? Sometimes the greatest victory isn't winning an argument. It's refusing to let the argument steal our peace, damage a relationship, or compromise our witness for Christ.

Jesus has won the decisive victory over sin and death. Although we will still face spiritual battles, we can stand firm in the confidence that Christ is greater than anything that comes against us. We can live a victorious Christian life. We just need to know our true enemy.

So today, keep your eyes open and your heart anchored in Christ. Recognize the real enemy, refuse to turn people into your opponents, and stand firm in the strength God provides. You may not be able to control every battle you face, but with God's help, you can choose how you respond.

Prayer

Father, thank You for opening my eyes to the real battle—not against people, but against the spiritual forces that seek to distract, divide, and discourage me. Help me recognize the enemy's strategies without giving in to fear. When I'm frustrated, misunderstood, or tempted to respond in anger, remind me to pause and seek Your wisdom. Teach me to rely on Your strength rather than my own. Clothe me with Your armor—Your truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and Your Word. Keep my heart steady, my mind clear, and my actions pleasing to You. Thank You that, whatever battles I face today, I never face them alone.

In Jesus' Name, Amen…
