A Good, Simple Life
“A simple life in the Fear-of-God is better than a rich life with a ton of headaches.”

There’s a peaceful, quiet wisdom in today’s verse that feels like a soft, gentle breeze in a noisy world. It reminds us that a life lived simply—with a heart anchored in reverence for God—is far better than a life overflowing with wealth but weighed down by turmoil. No, this is not a condemnation of riches. Remember that it is the love of money that is the root of all evil. Rather, this is revealing a truth we often forget: the peace of God and the presence of God are the real treasures in life.
A simple life doesn’t imply lack. It means having enough. It means living with modest means, steady rhythms, and a grateful heart. It’s the kind of life where contentment grows because you’re not chasing the next thing or guarding what you fear losing. It’s a life where your soul can rest and be at ease because God is enough.
The fear of the Lord is the heartbeat of a simple life of resting in Him. It’s the posture of a heart that honors God, trusts His wisdom, and shapes its choices around His ways. This kind of reverence brings clarity. It steadies your emotions. It keeps your desires from running wild. It teaches you to value what lasts.
On the other hand, “great wealth with turmoil” paints a picture we know all too well. Abundance can come with pressure—more to manage, more to protect, more to worry about. Wealth cannot promise comfort. But it may deliver sleepless nights. It might fill your hands, but it might empty your heart of peace.
Success isn’t measured by accumulation but by the condition of the heart. A simple life rooted in God’s presence is richer than any fortune built on anxiety. Peace beats possessions every time.
So today, let this verse settle into your heart. Let it remind you that God’s way is the way of quiet strength, steady joy, and deep contentment. A good, simple life—one shaped by reverence, gratitude, and trust—is a life truly blessed.
Prayer
Lord, teach me to value what matters most. Help me choose simplicity over striving and peace over pressure. Guard my heart from the illusion that more will satisfy me and anchor my joy in You alone. Shape my desires, steady my steps, and lead me into the good, simple life that honors You.
