Real Eternal Life Now
“And this is the real and eternal life: That they know you, The one and only true God, And Jesus Christ, whom you sent.”
John 17:3 - MSG
Eternal life. Real life. Real life forever. Jesus is praying to the Father on the night before His crucifixion. He’s praying for us. He’s praying for you. That all of us will have and experience real eternal life. In this single sentence, Jesus pulls back the curtain and shows us what real life actually is.
“And this is eternal life, that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”
Eternal life is not simply living forever. It is not a distant reward waiting on the other side of death. It is not a prize handed out at the end of the race. Jesus says eternal life is knowing God—a present, personal, intimate relationship that begins the moment a person believes. Think of it as knowing God's presence with you now through His precious Holy Spirit and then experiencing His presence forever in eternity.
Eternal life is a quality of life before it is a quantity of life. It is God awakening your spirit, opening your eyes, and drawing you into a living connection with Himself. It is the experience of His love, His presence, His voice, His guidance, His peace. It is the reality of God dwelling in you now, shaping your days today and anchoring your forever future in Himself.
And notice that Jesus uses the word “know.” Not “know about.” Not “agree with.” Not “study.” To know God is to enter into a relationship that is active, loving, and mutual. It is to walk with Him, respond to Him, trust Him, and follow His Son. You cannot know the Father without knowing Jesus, because Jesus is the perfect revelation of who the Father is. To know Christ is to know God Himself.
Jesus also calls the Father “the only true God,” drawing a sharp contrast between the living God and every false god, idol, or substitute the world offers. Real life—eternal life—comes only through the Father and the Son. Every other path promises much but delivers nothing.
So, what is “real and eternal life”? It is God giving Himself to you. It is God giving Himself to you and inviting you to respond by opening your heart to Him. It is a relationship that begins now and continues forever. It is the life you were created for.
Today, let your heart rest in this truth: You are already living your eternity. Every moment you walk with Jesus, every step you take in His presence, every whisper of His Spirit inside you—that is eternal life unfolding in real time. Not someday. Not eventually. Not later. Now.
Live today as someone who knows God. Live today as someone who belongs to Jesus. Live today in the real and eternal life He has already placed within you.
Prayer
Father, thank You for inviting me into real and eternal life—not someday, but right now. Thank You that through Jesus, I can know You personally, walk with You daily, and experience Your love in a way that transforms everything in my everyday existence. Open my heart to know You more deeply. Remove anything that distracts me from Your presence. Teach me to follow Jesus with sincerity, trust, and joy. Let Your eternal life flow through my thoughts, my choices, my relationships, and my purpose today. Draw me closer to You, the only true God, and let my life reflect the beauty of knowing Your Son.
In His Most Holy Name, Amen…
