The Fruit of Light
“The good, the right, the true - these are the actions appropriate for daylight hours.”
Ephesians 5:9 - MSG
“God is Light and in Him is no darkness at all.” Those words are found in 1 John 1:5 and give us one of the three absolutes about God. He is Light. He is Spirit. He is love. The beautiful truth is that through His Spirit, God's light, love, and life now dwell within us and flow through us. His light in us creates fruit. Fruit is good for eating. When the fruit on the tree is ripe, others pick it and are filled with the goodness the fruit provides.
What is that goodness? It is righteousness, purity, holiness, and truth. It is the very character of God expressed through His people. No darkness, no sin, no deception, no moral flaws, no shadows, just perfection. In Him. And the Word of God tells us we are complete in Him. Perfect? No, but light for the world to see. Fruit for the world around us to enjoy. We have the fruit of light in us, His life, available for others.
What does this actually mean for us? God never lies, twists, or manipulates. He is incapable of evil. His light shows what is real, right, and good. Darkness cannot survive where He is. One day, we will share fully in that perfect light. For now, we are called “children of the Light” and God is our Father who is giving us a moral call, an invitation to “walk in the light.”
That means we are being directed to live honestly before God, confess sin instead of trying to hide it, let His truth expose what needs healing, choose righteousness instead of darkness, and reflect His character in the world.
And here's the beautiful part: God's light shines both in you and through you. Because His Spirit lives within you, His light now shines from your life. Jesus called you "the light of the world." People all around you are hungry for hope, truth, and grace—the very fruit His light produces in you. They are hungry for the light of the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ shining through an ordinary life surrendered to Him.
There’s a definitive reality to the Light that is in you. To the New Birth you experienced when you first met Jesus. Because Christ lives in you, there is goodness in you. You can be kind and helpful and do things that help other people. You are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. You have the capacity to live a clean life in a way that is pleasing to God. You can live a life of integrity and be real in both your beliefs and your actions. You have this fruit of the light – the Light – in you. Go today and let it shine.
Prayer
Father, thank You for placing Your light within me. Let Your light shine clearly first in me, and then through me, so that others may taste the fruit of Your life and be drawn to the beauty of who You are. Help me to walk in the light today. Let every step I take reflect Your character, Your kindness, and Your purity. Make my life a quiet testimony of Your presence, a light in a world that is hungry for You.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
