Sowing Righteousness
“Bad work gets paid with a bad check; good work gets solid pay.”
Proverbs 11:18 - MSG
Watching the farmers’ crops mature over the summer has always fascinated me. They prepare the soil, plant the seed, fertilize, water, and then patiently wait for the harvest. They understand that a good harvest never comes without first doing the work.
What if they skipped all that? What if they simply hoped for a bountiful crop without ever planting a single seed? There would be no harvest because nothing had been sown.
That simple truth is at the heart of today’s verse. God designed life to operate on the principle of sowing and reaping. In this proverb, righteousness is not merely something we possess—it is something we practice. Because we are in right standing with God through Jesus Christ, we are called to live in ways that reflect His character. Every act of integrity, kindness, generosity, and obedience is a seed planted. Over time, God uses those seeds to bless both our lives and the lives of others.
We were never saved simply to wait for Heaven. God has entrusted each of us with the privilege of sowing into the lives around us. He has filled us with His love so we can share it. He has placed His light within us so we can shine in a world that often feels dark. Every encouraging word, every compassionate act, every expression of grace becomes a seed of hope planted in someone's heart.
Sometimes we are called to water seeds someone else has planted. Other times we may help soften a hardened heart through patience, forgiveness, or simple acts of kindness. As we follow the Holy Spirit's leading, our lives become instruments through which God nurtures spiritual growth in others. We may never see the full results this side of Heaven, but no seed sown in His name is ever wasted.
The farmer doesn't expect a harvest the day after planting. He faithfully keeps doing what he knows is right, trusting that in time the harvest will come. The same is true for us. Every time we choose honesty over compromise, kindness over criticism, forgiveness over resentment, or generosity over selfishness, we are sowing seeds that God can use to produce lasting fruit.
This is the life God calls us to—a life that quietly sows His love wherever it goes. As we walk in integrity, fairness, compassion, and faithfulness, we leave behind more than kind memories; we leave a harvest of hope. And in His perfect time, God promises that every seed faithfully planted will produce a harvest worth waiting for, solid pay for good work.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the privilege of sowing goodness into the lives around me. Teach me to be a faithful farmer—breaking up the hard places, planting seeds of kindness, and trusting You with the harvest. Let Your righteousness flow through my words, my choices, and my quiet acts of love. Strengthen my hands when the work feels slow and remind me that nothing sown in Your name is ever wasted. May my life reflect Your heart and bring Your light into the places that need it most.
