Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another - showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God's way.
2 Timothy 3:16 - MSG
In a church service once, we repeated a saying that went something like this: "God said it, I believe it, and that settles it." Over the years, as I have pondered that statement, I've shortened it. "God said it. That settles it."
The Bible, yes, the one you read, is God's Word. No, that isn't just the title of the Book. It is literally God speaking to us through the words He inspired. And today's Scripture tells us why we need it.
First, we need to know the truth, and the Word of God is truth. You may recall that Jesus told us He is the way, the truth, and the life. Why do we need that truth? Because of our rebellion. Sin is part of our human nature, and apart from God's grace, there is nothing we can do to make ourselves righteous. We need His Word to expose our rebellion and show us our need for Him.
It's also the greatest behavioral guidebook ever written. In short, it teaches us how to live. It shows us where we get things wrong and where we need to make changes. The Bible I read every morning often reveals things about myself that I might never recognize if I didn't look into the mirror of God's Word.
And then there's the training. We need to be trained to live God's way. Having a relationship with religion, following the rules of religiosity, or adhering to denominational doctrines will never accomplish what God's Word can accomplish in our lives. Knowing about God and knowing God are two different things, and knowing how He wants us to live is key to living a victorious Christian life.
We need His Word to mold and shape us, correct us and guide us in the direction He wants us to go. And here's something worth remembering: We don't simply read God's Word to discover what it says. We read it to discover what God wants to change in us. There's a difference between reading the Bible and allowing the Bible to read us.
There's a reason God gave us His Word, and that reason can be summed up in one word: love. He loves us and knows that the very best life we can experience while we sojourn here on earth is a life lived in the fullness of His ways. A life that reflects who He is to a needy world around us. A life free from the bondage of sin. A life lived in Christlikeness.
So, why read my Bible? To become more like Him. To allow His Word to penetrate the deeper recesses of my heart. To learn how to live as He wants me to live. To surrender. To live a life that honors and glorifies Him for who He is and all He does.
Today, as you open your Bible, remember that it is more than just a book. It is the Book God wrote, and He gave it to us for a reason: to teach us how to live His way. Not simply to fill our minds with knowledge, but to transform our hearts and make us more like Jesus.
Prayer
Father, thank You for giving us Your Word and for loving us enough to show us the path You want us to walk. As we open our Bibles, help us to see Your Truth clearly and receive it with humble hearts. Reveal the areas of our lives that need correction, strengthen us where we are weak, and teach us how to live in a way that honors You.
Let Your Word shape our thoughts, guide our decisions, and draw us closer to Jesus each day. May we not simply read Scripture but allow it to transform us from the inside out so that our lives reflect Your love and grace to those around us.
Thank You for speaking to us through Your Word and for faithfully leading us in Your ways.
In Jesus' Name, Amen…
