Live Well, Live Wisely, Live Humbly

“Do you want to be counted wise, to build a reputation for wisdom? Here's what you do: Live well, live wisely, live humbly. It's the way you live, not the way you talk, that counts.”

James 3:13 - MSG

I heard a tongue twister some time ago that fits today's Scripture quite well. It goes something like this:

"If your walk talk doesn't outtalk your talk talk, then you aren't walking the walk—you're just talking the talk."

James says it a bit differently, but he doesn't mince words. He draws a clear line between two ways of living—two paths, two value systems, two sources of wisdom. One belongs to the world. The other belongs to the Word. And he sums it up this way: "It's the way you live, not the way you talk, that counts."

The world's way says wisdom is proven by how much you know, how sharp you sound, or how impressive you appear. It rewards self-promotion, platform building, and the subtle art of making sure people notice you. It celebrates ambition, even when that ambition quietly pushes others aside. It teaches that the loudest voice wins, the strongest personality leads, and the most confident opinion must be right.

But the Word's way is entirely different. James says true wisdom is seen—not in intellect, but in conduct. Not in how loudly you speak, but in how faithfully you live. Not in how much you know, but in how humbly you walk.

Heavenly wisdom is quiet, steady, and deeply rooted. It shows itself in a good life—a life marked by gentleness, purity, sincerity, mercy, and peace. It is the kind of wisdom that doesn't need to announce itself because its fruit speaks for it. It is humble because it knows its source. It is peaceful because it trusts its God. It is sincere because it has nothing to prove and nothing to protect.

James invites us to examine which kind of wisdom is shaping our lives. Are we being discipled by the world's values—competition, comparison, and self-importance? Or are we being shaped by the Spirit through humility, purity, and peace?

One way leads to disorder. The other leads to a life that quietly reflects Christ. When we fill ourselves with the Word of God, its inherent power shapes us into men and women who reflect the heart of Christ. So today, let Him fill you. Live well. Live wisely. Live humbly.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to walk in the wisdom that comes from You. Guard my heart from the world's ways—its pride, its noise, and its self-promotion—and shape me instead with humility, gentleness, and sincerity. Let my life, not merely my words, be the evidence of Your work in me.

In Jesus' Name, Amen…
