If you see some brother or sister in need and have the means to do something about it but turn a cold shoulder and do nothing, what happens to God's love? It disappears. And you made it disappear.
1 John 3:17 - MSG
I made love disappear? Ouch! But love doesn’t disappear all at once. No, it fades when we stop responding to others’ needs. It weakens when we stop noticing. It grows cold when we stop acting. And today, we’re being reminded of the reality of love in action. A love that is alive.
If we see a brother or sister in need—clearly see it—and have the means to help but choose not to, something tragic happens. God’s love, which should be flowing through us, is no longer being expressed as it should. Not because God has withdrawn His love, but because we have closed the door.
There are times when God calls us to do something for others. Today’s verse reminds us that following Jesus involves more than believing the right things or hearing the Word. It means putting our faith into action, caring for others in the Body of Christ, and allowing His love to be seen in the way we live.
It’s interesting that God’s love is so closely connected to helping others. We live out His love by allowing His life to be reflected in ours. Quite often, we can sincerely wish someone well, feel moved by a difficult situation, and still let the moment pass without responding. But there’s a difference between noticing a need and choosing to do something about it.
Keeping love alive begins with keeping our hearts available. It means allowing another person’s circumstances to interrupt our comfort long enough to ask, “What can I share?” Perhaps there is room at our table, an extra bag of groceries in our budget, or a warm coat we no longer wear. Something ordinary in our hands may answer a very real need in someone else’s life.
This is not a call to meet every need or give what we do not have. It is an invitation to respond faithfully with what has been entrusted to us. We can ask what would genuinely help rather than assume we know. We can help quietly, honoring the other person’s dignity. Love does not need an audience to become meaningful.
No, we don’t practice generosity to “buy” God’s affection; we respond because we have already received it. His love teaches us to loosen our grip, pay attention, and let compassion become something another person can actually experience.
Today, don’t let a moment of compassion pass without considering how you might respond. Begin with one need and one thoughtful act of kindness within your means. Keep love alive—not merely in what you intend, but in what you are willing to share.
Prayer
Father, keep my heart from closing itself off to the needs around me. Help me see clearly, respond wisely, and give generously wherever You’ve equipped me to help. Let Your love flow through my actions today and keep me in close fellowship with You as I care for those You place in my path.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen…
