Growing a Longer Fuse
"Fools have short fuses and explode all too quickly; the prudent quietly shrug off insults.”
Proverbs 12:16 - MSG
One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Proverbs 17:28. It reminds us that it is often better to keep our mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and prove they’re right. Of course, that’s my loose paraphrase, but it captures the heart of the verse. It’s related to today’s Scripture, and both talk about the mouth again and the power of our words.
There is a quiet strength in those who refuse to allow their mouth to be ruled by their first reaction. So, the reality is we are either fools, or wise, depending on how we react to insults. A foolish person is easily provoked, easily rattled, easily pulled into emotional storms. Their annoyance shows at once, and their frustration becomes public before they have even considered the cost.
But the prudent, the wise, are different. They carry a longer fuse. They have learned the grace of pausing, breathing, and letting small offenses pass without demanding attention. Their dignity is protected not because they never feel hurt, but because they refuse to let every sting become a spectacle. They choose their battles wisely. They understand that not every slight deserves a response, and not every insult is worth forfeiting their peace. They have learned how to “count to ten” before reacting.
This kind of restraint is not weakness. It is maturity. It is the fruit of a heart anchored in God rather than in pride or insecurity. When your identity is rooted in Him, you don’t need to defend yourself at every turn. You don’t need to react to every provocation. You can quietly let things go because your peace is not fragile—it is held by the One who steadies your spirit. And you don’t need to let everyone know you’re right and they’re wrong.
Growing a longer fuse begins with a simple shift: bringing your emotions to God before you release them into the world.
When you pause long enough to pray, the Lord strengthens your patience, softens your reactions, and helps you walk through the moment with wisdom instead of impulse.
There’s another part to growing a longer fuse as well. When God's Word is hidden in our hearts, it begins shaping our responses before our emotions take over. Scripture slows our reactions, redirects our thoughts, and helps us honor God even when others are unkind. Growing a longer fuse honors God. It honors the Holy Spirit with whom we are gifted and who lives within us and keeps us from grieving Him through careless words or reactions.
Today let’s see if we can grow a longer fuse. Let’s see if we can honor God with the wisdom He has planted in us. Let’s be Christ-like. Remember, Jesus Himself was insulted, misunderstood, falsely accused, and mocked, yet He never allowed the sins of others to dictate His response. He entrusted Himself to the Father, leaving us an example to follow.
Prayer
Lord, help me grow a longer fuse. Teach me to pause when I feel provoked and to bring my emotions to You before I speak. Steady my heart when I am tempted to react quickly and give me the grace to overlook small offenses with quiet strength. Let my responses reflect Your peace, not my pride. Shape my character so that wisdom guides my reactions and Your Spirit guards my words.
