Engage God Before You Speak
“A fool lets it all hang out; a sage quietly mulls it over.”
Proverbs 29:11 - MSG
It’s a saying you may have heard, “Engage brain before opening mouth.” There's a lot of old-fashioned wisdom in that saying. In fact, it's wisdom the Bible has been teaching all along.
Today's verse reminds us that a fool vents every feeling the moment it rises, but wisdom teaches a better way. God invites us into a life where our emotions are not ignored, yet neither are they allowed to rule us. There's a delicate balance here and learning it is one of the marks of true wisdom.
The Message Bible paints the picture vividly: the foolish person “lets it all hang out,” spilling whatever rises in the heart without pause or prayer. Speaking without thinking. Ranting and raving without considering the consequences. But the wise person holds things back—not in denial, but in discipline. Not in ignoring feelings, but in channeling them through the Lord’s wisdom before they can before they spill out onto someone else.
We’re human, so yes, there are moments when frustration surges, when disappointment tightens your chest, or when anger feels justified. In those moments, the temptation is to speak quickly, react sharply, or unload everything you feel onto the nearest person. Scripture warns that this kind of venting often leads to regret, damaged relationships, and words that cannot be retrieved. Someone once said, “A spoken word, like a thrown stone, cannot be recalled.”
Wisdom does something different. Wisdom pauses. Wisdom breathes. Wisdom turns inward—not to stew, but to seek God. Sometimes the holiest thing you can do is wait long enough for the Holy Spirit to soften your next sentence before speaking. Wisdom engages the Lord, pouring out the raw emotion to Him instead of onto others. When you bring your unfiltered feelings to God first, He steadies your emotions and enables you to respond with grace instead of impulse. That's how peace enters the moment. That's how relationships are protected. That's how your words become instruments of life rather than harm.
Jesus reminds us that "out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks." Our words simply reveal what is happening inside us. That's why bringing our hearts to God before opening our mouths changes everything. When we allow Him to calm our spirits and shape our responses, everyone benefits—including us. Today, before you speak, engage God first.
Prayer
Lord, You see every feeling that rises in my heart—my frustration, my hurt, my disappointment, and my anger. Today, I ask You to teach me the way of wisdom. Help me to pause before I speak, to turn to You before I react, and to pour out my heart in prayer instead of venting carelessly to others. Steady my thoughts, soften my words, and let my responses reflect Your peace rather than my impulses. May my tongue be an instrument of grace, and may my emotions be held in Your loving hands.
In Jesus’ name, Amen…
