The Holy Rest

God blessed the seventh day. He made it a Holy Day Because on that day he rested from his work, all the creating God had done.

Genesis 2:3 - MSG

During the six days of creation, God accomplished everything He purposed to do. His work was complete, good, and lacking nothing. People in the world today also find that productivity can be good. But busyness can become the norm. Some even strive for that “off the charts” production. “Workaholics” can oftentimes become the undesired result.

Rest, on the other hand, is not always something we strive for. Yet rest is essential. In fact, rest isn't the opposite of productivity—it's what makes productivity possible. So, today we’re simply being reminded to rest. God knew we would all need to rest. That’s why He established a day of rest. But then He called it “Holy.”

Rest becomes holy the moment God touches it.

Rest is not merely a pause in activity — it is a divine declaration that time itself can be set apart, blessed, and made sacred. God did not rest because He was weary; He rested because creation was complete, harmonious, and whole. His rest was the joyful acknowledgment that nothing more needed to be added.

This is why rest can be holy for us as well. It is not laziness, nor is it an escape from responsibility. Holy rest is the intentional recognition that the entirety of our lives is held by the One who is greater than our own efforts. It is the quiet confession that the world does not depend on our constant striving. When we cease from striving, we step into the rhythm God established at the very beginning — a rhythm that honors both work and the sacred pause that follows – the resting in Him.

Holy rest reminds us that wholeness is not found in doing more, but in trusting more. It invites us to stop long enough to see what God has already done, to breathe deeply, and to remember that we are not sustained by productivity but by His presence. In resting, we acknowledge that God is still at work, even when we are still.

God blessed the seventh day by resting. He still blesses His children as they learn to rest in Him.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for showing us that rest is not weakness but holiness. Teach me to honor the pauses You invite me into. May my rest reflect trust, gratitude, and the awareness that You are the One who completes every good work. Help me to rest and receive the quiet gift of Your presence. May my rest reflect trust, gratitude, and the awareness that You are the One who completes every good work both in me and through me.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen…
