Blind Faith

It's what we trust in but don't yet see that keeps us going.

2 Corinthians 5:7 - MSG

You've probably heard the expression "blind faith." It generally describes believing or trusting something without having evidence, proof, or any real reason to believe that your trust is justified. In other words, you believe without really knowing why.

At first glance, today's verse might sound like a description of blind faith. After all, it speaks of trusting in things we "don't yet see." Other translations simply say that we walk by faith, not by sight.

So, what are we saying today? How can something we cannot see keep us going? What creates a sense of trust so strong that it isn't dependent upon any of our five physical senses?

God. Who He is. What He does, and His faithfulness to us.

To live by faith means that our decisions are not dictated solely by what we can currently see. It means continuing to do what is right even when we don't see immediate results. We remain hopeful when circumstances appear discouraging, and we obey God even when the outcome is uncertain. It means trusting His promises more than our present feelings.

Perhaps one of the best illustrations is a farmer planting seeds. He puts those seeds into the ground without being able to see the harvest that will eventually come. But his actions aren't based on wishful thinking. He understands the principles of planting and harvesting. He has confidence based on what he knows to be true. In much the same way, our faith isn't simply wishful thinking. We trust God because we have learned who He is, what He has done, and what He has promised. We may not see the results yet, but we have every reason to trust the One who has promised them.

But there's more. Spiritually speaking, the word live points to dependence. Just as our physical bodies depend on food, water, and air to sustain life, our spiritual lives depend on our relationship with God and our trust in Him.

Living by faith means trusting God's character when circumstances are confusing. It means believing His Word when our emotions suggest otherwise. It means resting in Christ's finished work even when we don't feel worthy. Perhaps most importantly, it means looking beyond temporary realities to the eternal ones God has promised.

So, true biblical faith isn't really "blind faith." Blind faith believes without a basis. Biblical faith trusts a God whose character has been revealed, whose faithfulness has been proven, and whose promises can be trusted, even when the next step cannot be seen.

We don't have to see what God is doing to trust that He is working. We don't have to know what tomorrow holds to trust the One who holds tomorrow.

Faith isn't simply believing that God can. It's trusting Him enough to keep moving forward, believing that He will fulfill what He has promised, even before we can see it. It’s what keeps us going.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for being trustworthy in every season of life. When I cannot see what lies ahead, help me to keep going, to walk by faith and not by sight. Strengthen my heart when circumstances feel uncertain and remind me that Your promises are sure. Teach me to trust Your character when I do not understand Your plans and to lean on Your Word when my feelings try to lead me elsewhere. Help me continue doing what is right, even when I do not see immediate results, knowing that You are always at work beneath the surface. Thank You that my faith is not blind but anchored in who You are, a God who has never failed and never will. Keep my eyes fixed on the eternal realities You have prepared for those who love You and fill me with confidence as I follow You one step at a time.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen…
