An Invitation to Change
“I'm here inviting outsiders, not insiders - an invitation to a changed life, changed inside and out."
Luke 5:32 - MSG
She was asked what had happened to her and how the change had taken place in her life. Her response was simple yet astounding: “I was one way and now I’m not. The difference in between was Jesus.”
Somehow, she had been miraculously changed from the inside out.
That’s what happens to us when we respond to Jesus’ invitation to a different way of life. There is so much noise in the world vying for our attention. Our lives can simply drift from place to place and season to season while everything remains status quo. But Jesus doesn’t do status quo. He changes us when we accept His invitation.
It’s interesting that Jesus uses physical sickness to identify those who need to change. The healthy don’t need a doctor. We all needed a doctor—the Great Physician—to heal us. We needed Him to heal the sickness within us, the sickness of sin.
While today’s verse finds Jesus speaking to the religious leaders of His day, the timelessness of His message reaches all of us who recognize our need for Him. We can keep all the rules of religiosity and convince ourselves that everything is well. But outward religious behavior cannot replace an inwardly changed heart. Without recognizing our need for change, Jesus’ invitation might sound as though it is meant for someone else.
But it is meant for all of us.
That’s what “repent” means. Not a 360, but a 180. It means turning away from the things of the world and its sin and turning toward God and His ways. “The difference in between was Jesus” is what we all need to be able to say.
We stop. We look deeply within. We admit that we need to change. We surrender ourselves to Jesus and allow Him to begin His transforming work within us.
And then, we change.
The prodigal son did that. I did that. Every true follower of Jesus Christ has done that. We have turned from the old, accepted the invitation to change, and begun this wonderful journey with the Lord—a journey that leads to life everlasting, lasting peace, and genuine joy.
Yes, Jesus offers us a changed life—a life changed from the inside out.
Thank You, Jesus.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for extending an invitation that reaches all the way into the deepest places of my life. Thank You for calling me not to stay as I am, but to step into the newness You alone can create. I confess my need for Your healing, Your cleansing, and Your transforming work within me.
Turn my heart fully toward You. Help me to walk away from the old patterns, the old sins, and the old ways of thinking that once defined me. Shape me into someone who reflects Your grace, Your truth, and Your life.
Continue Your transforming work within me, Lord. May the difference in my life always point back to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen…
