Seeds and Weeds

“The seed cast in the weeds is the person who hears the kingdom news, but weeds of worry and illusions about getting more and wanting everything under the sun strangle what was heard, and nothing comes of it.”

Matthew 13:22 - MSG

There is something quite extraordinary about the Word of God. It is a living seed. It is the Seed that first brings the life of Christ into us. Then it continues to grow as we journey through life, shaping us more and more into His likeness. We are God's garden, and as our faithful Gardener, He lovingly cultivates us into the beautiful people He created us to be. But there are weeds in every garden. Just ask any gardener and they will tell you that enjoying a beautiful garden depends on keeping the weeds out.

Today’s verse talks about weeds. “Weeds of worry” creep into our lives, yes, even as true Followers of Jesus Christ. Then there’s the “illusions about getting more” and “wanting everything under the sun.” These are weeds that strangle the seeds - the Seed - that is supposed to be growing inside us. Read the verse again. The weeds choke the Word, and it becomes unfruitful. Not the person, the Word. The Word is choked, and as a result our lives become unfruitful. The seed of God's Word cannot bear its intended fruit in our lives when we give more attention to worry, the deceitfulness of riches, and the pursuit of "more" than we do to God's voice.

In short, the world’s way of doing things plants weeds in our gardens, the gardens of our hearts. On the other hand, the Word’s way of doing things creates a beautiful garden in each of our lives. We become fruitful. We grow. We mature. We ripen. We become fruitful. We become more like Christ. We overflow with His life because the Seed is doing its work within us. We overflow because the Seed is doing its work in our lives.

So, there’s a quiet warning tucked inside Jesus’ words today—one that speaks gently, yet truthfully, to the places in our hearts where competing desires try to take root. The seed is good. The message is good. The kingdom news is powerful and life‑giving. But Jesus tells us that even good seed can be smothered when the soil is crowded.

Worry grows fast. It spreads, reaching into every corner of our thoughts. And the illusions of “more”—more comfort, more control, more success, more of everything under the sun—can feel so convincing that they begin to shape our priorities without us noticing. Before long, the tender sprout of God’s word is pressed in on all sides.

But Jesus isn’t scolding us here. He’s inviting us to notice what’s happening beneath the surface. He’s reminding us that the life He plants in us needs room—room to breathe, room to deepen, room to flourish. The weeds don’t have to win. They can be cleared, little by little, as we turn our attention back to Him. And as we do, the seed He planted begins to rise again, steady and strong, bearing fruit that lasts.

Prayer

Lord, help me see the weeds that have crept into my heart. Give me courage to release the worries, the illusions, and the restless desire for more. Make space within me for Your Word to grow freely and fully, producing the fruit that brings You glory.

In Jesus’ Name. Amen...
