Rescued From Darkness

God rescued us from dead-end alleys and dark dungeons. He's set us up in the kingdom of the Son he loves so much.

Colossians 1:13 – MSG

“I know what it’s like, walking down an empty street, listening to the sounds of your own footsteps, shutters closed, blinds drawn, doors locked against you. And then you aren’t sure whether you’re walking toward something or whether you’re just walking away.”

Darkness. The darkness of the mind. Of the soul. Of the very being God created to walk in the light. Smothered by whispers of fear. Stranded in the dead-end alleys of aimless wandering. Lost.

The quote above comes from the stage play Inherit the Wind, a dramatic portrayal of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial in Dayton, Tennessee. The trial centered on a teacher who dared to teach evolution in a state where doing so was against the law. It was a time of deep conflict, when fear and closed minds often made it difficult to listen to opposing views.

But darkness isn't limited to a courtroom or a small Tennessee town. It can find its way into our hearts and minds, too.

So why am I sharing all this?

We live in a world where darkness is present, but we belong to another Kingdom. Through Christ, we have been rescued from the dominion of darkness and brought into the Kingdom of the Son God loves. We may encounter darkness in this world, but darkness no longer defines who we are or where we belong.

And yet, how often do we find ourselves struggling with heaviness of heart? Fear, doubt, and discouragement creep in, and the dead-end alleys of life begin to feel like our permanent address. If we dwell there long enough, our hearts can feel as though they are locked inside a dungeon.

So, what is the answer? How do we incorporate the reality of today's verse into our daily lives? How do we walk in the Light when everything around us seems dark? How do we open the doors of our hearts when heaviness sets in?

The answer begins with remembering what God has already done.

He has rescued us.

We don't have to earn our way out of darkness or convince God to come to our aid. Through Jesus Christ, He has already brought us into His Kingdom. Our circumstances may change, and our feelings may fluctuate, but our place in Him remains secure.

That doesn't mean we will never struggle. It means we don't have to let our struggles define us.

When fear tells us we are alone, we remind ourselves of His presence. When discouragement tells us nothing will ever change, we remember that our circumstances do not cancel His promises. When our thoughts lead us down those familiar dead-end alleys, we take them captive and make them obedient to Christ.

We fight the good fight of faith, not in our own strength, but by standing on the truth of God's Word and trusting in His unfailing love.

And here's something else worth remembering: God's love isn't merely something we look toward when life gets dark. Through the Holy Spirit, His love is at work within us, helping us walk in His truth, extend His grace, and letting His light shine through us.

Love. Light. Rescue.

Today, let's remember who we are and Whose we are. When the road feels lonely, when our hearts grow heavy, and when the darkness seems overwhelming, let's remember that we have been rescued from the dead-end alleys and dark dungeons of life.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for rescuing us from the darkness and bringing us into the Kingdom of Your beloved Son. Help us walk in Your light today.

Open the doors of our hearts to Your truth. Fill us with hope where there is despair, peace where there is turmoil, and courage where there is fear. Help us remember Your promises when our feelings tell us otherwise. Let Your light shine through us so that others may see the beauty of Your grace and the power of Your rescue.

Thank You that we are no longer under the dominion of darkness but have been brought into the Kingdom of Your beloved Son. Today, help us remember who we are and Whose we are. May we live in the joy, freedom, and confidence of belonging to You.

In Jesus' Name, Amen…
