Helping Others Find Their Way
No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a washtub or shoves it under the bed. No, you set it up on a lamp stand so those who enter the room can see their way.
Luke 6:18 - MSG
There’s something deeply intentional about the way Jesus speaks of light. Light isn’t accidental. It isn’t passive. And it certainly isn’t meant to be hidden. When He says that no one lights a lamp only to cover it with a jar or tuck it under a bed, He’s naming something we instinctively know, that light is created to shine. It’s meant to guide, to reveal, to help others see what they could not see before.
In this short verse, Jesus is speaking about more than a lamp. He’s speaking about the Truth of God that has taken root in a person’s life. Once His Word has been received—truly heard, truly welcomed—it isn’t meant to stay tucked away in private corners. It’s meant to be lived out in ways that are visible and real. Not loud. Not performative. Just honest, transparent everyday living that lets others see the difference His grace makes, to let them see the light.
This is why Jesus places this teaching right after the Parable of the Sower. He’s showing us that genuine hearing produces genuine fruit. When the Gospel takes hold in the heart, it naturally becomes light. Remember God is Light and that light, God Himself is in you. It’s light that shows up in integrity at work, kindness in conflict, patience when it’s costly, and courage when it would be easier to shrink back. These are the quiet ways the lamp is placed on its stand. This is the way we are to shine in this darkened world.
And here’s the beautiful part: your life becomes a guide for others without you even realizing it. Yes, when your light shines there are others who see that there is something different about you, but it’s more than that. Someone who is discouraged may find hope again because of your shining light. Someone who feels unseen may feel valued because of your kindness, your shining light. Someone who is searching for God may begin to sense His nearness because your life, your light, His light in you, quietly points in His direction.
Jesus isn’t asking you to manufacture light. He’s simply asking you not to hide the light He has already placed within you. Let it shine in the ordinary places—your home, your conversations, your decisions, your responses. Let it shine in ways that help others find their way toward Him. Let the light of the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ that lives in every true Follower of Jesus Christ shine through you. When you do this you help others find their way to the Light as well.
Prayer
Father, thank You for placing Your light within me. Help me live with honesty, integrity, courage, and compassion so that others can see Your goodness through my life. Keep me from hiding the Light You’ve entrusted to me and let my daily choices reflect the truth of Your Word for others to see.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen…
