God Blesses the Ordinary

"But you - you serve your God and he'll bless your food and your water. I'll get rid of the sickness among you;”

Exodus 23:25 - MSG

From time to time, I find an “if/then” principle in the Word of God. His covenant with Israel was often expressed that way: If you will follow Me, I will be your God and I will care for you.

But this wasn’t a business arrangement with God—you do this, and I’ll give you that. It was about relationships. God was calling His people to belong to Him, trust Him, and walk in His ways. His blessings flowed from that relationship.

Today’s verse gives us a glimpse into the heart of that covenant. God called Israel to serve Him alone, and He promised to care for them in the ordinary things of life. He would bless their food and water and watch over their well-being.

Mine is yours when your heart is Mine.

Obedience was not a way for Israel to earn God’s love. It was a way of living in relationship with the God who already loved them. He wanted their hearts, not merely their outward compliance.

God called His people to worship Him alone because He knew what idols would eventually do to their hearts. The nations around them offered many gods and many ways of living, but God knew those paths would ultimately lead them away from Him. Obedience was choosing God's way because His way leads to life.

Then God promised to bless their “bread and water”—the simple, everyday necessities of life. I love that. God was showing them that their ordinary needs mattered to Him.

Our basic needs are never too small for God's care.

He also promised to remove sickness from among them. This was part of His covenant with Israel, not a promise that God's people would never experience illness or hardship. Scripture makes that clear throughout the story of God's people.

But the principle remains: God cares about our well-being, and He is present with us in every circumstance. Sometimes He protects us from difficulties. Sometimes He carries us through them. Sometimes His answer comes through healing, and sometimes His grace sustains us while we walk through something we would never have chosen. Today’s verse isn't a promise of a life without trouble. It is a reminder of the character of the God who walks with us through every season. And our obedience doesn't eliminate every challenge. It brings us into closer alignment with the One who faithfully meets us in those challenges.

And perhaps that's what we need to remember today: God blesses the ordinary. He is interested in the food on our table, the water we drink, the strength we need, the burdens we carry, and the simple details of our everyday lives. Nothing is too ordinary for His attention, and no season is beyond His care.

So today, don't overlook the blessings in the ordinary things. Thank Him for the meal. Thank Him for the water. Thank Him for the strength to get through another day. And when life becomes difficult, remember that His presence is a blessing too.

God blesses the ordinary. God strengthens the weary. And God faithfully walks with His children through every season.

Prayer

Father, thank You for being a God who cares about the ordinary details of my life. Teach me to obey You with a willing heart—not out of fear or an attempt to earn Your favor, but because I love You and trust Your ways.

Thank You for the food on my table, the water I drink, the strength You provide, and the countless blessings I sometimes overlook. And when life becomes difficult, remind me that I am never walking through it alone.

Help me to recognize Your goodness in the ordinary and to trust Your care in every season.
