Drink From the Living Well

“On the final and climactic day of the Feast, Jesus took his stand. He cried out,

‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.’”

John 7:37 - MSG

It was hot. I had been working hard, and I was thirsty. Very thirsty. So, I drank some water. It helped. But there was a time in my life when I had a very different kind of thirst. It was a spiritual thirst—a deep need for the living water that only Jesus can provide.

Jesus once talked with a woman at a well about this kind of water. She had come to draw physical water, but Jesus offered her something far greater: water that would satisfy a thirst deep within her. And in today’s verse, Jesus extends that same invitation to us: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.”

But the process begins with recognizing that we are thirsty.

We have to be willing to admit that there are places within us that the things of this world cannot satisfy. Just like the woman at the well, we can spend our lives drawing from one earthly well after another, only to discover that our thirst returns. We need to keep coming back to Jesus, drinking deeply from the living water He provides.

And there is something important here. Coming to Jesus for salvation and continuing to thirst for Jesus are not the same thing. Salvation begins our relationship with Him, but our relationship doesn't end there. We need to stay thirsty for Him—to seek His presence, listen for His voice, depend on His strength, and allow Him to continually fill us. He is offering Himself as the One who satisfies the spiritual longing, emptiness, and searching within the human heart. Our hearts and the hearts of those we encounter each day. He is the One who fills us.

Yes, it is an invitation to come, but Jesus took the invitation even further. Just a few verses after today’s verse, He said that whoever believes in Him would have “rivers of living water” flowing from within. John tells us that Jesus was speaking about the Holy Spirit, whom Believers would receive after Jesus was glorified.

That is the reality we live in today.

The Holy Spirit is God's precious presence within us—the living water flowing into us as we come to Jesus and drink deeply from Him. And what He pours into us isn't meant to stop with us. He fills us so that we can overflow into the lives of others.

Think about that for a moment. A well doesn't exist merely to hold water. Water is meant to be drawn from it and used. In the same way, God doesn't fill us simply so we can keep His goodness to ourselves. He fills us so His love, grace, peace, kindness, and presence can flow through us into a thirsty world.

So, come to Him today. Drink deeply. And then come back tomorrow and drink again.

May we never lose our thirst for Jesus. May He fill us full to overflowing, so that His living water can flow through our lives and refresh those around us.

Friends, may we all drink deeply from the Living Well today and tomorrow and forever. May He fill us so full that we overflow with His presence, His love, and His grace.

Drink, friends, from the Living Well and thirst no more.

Prayer

Jesus, You are the source of living water, the One who satisfies the deepest longings of my heart. Today I come to You thirsty—thirsty for Your presence, Your peace, Your strength, and Your Spirit.

Fill me again with the water only You can give. Reach into the dry places of my heart and restore what has grown weary. Help me recognize when I am trying to satisfy my thirst with things that can never truly fill me.

Keep me coming back to You. Keep me thirsty for You. And as You fill me, let Your life overflow from within me so that others may experience Your goodness through my words, my actions, and the way I live.

Keep me close to You, Jesus, and keep me drinking deeply from the Living Well that never runs dry.
